Native to the island of Borneo where it has been collected only from forested peat swamps of the Arut river basin close to the town of Pangkalan Bun in the Indonesian province of Kalimatan Tengah (Central Kalimantan) and from Sukadana district, Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan). The largest officially recorded specimen measured just 1.4"/3.6cm
Inhabits peat swamps and associated black water streams. These ancient biotopes are usually found in areas of rainforest, the dense canopy of branches above meaning very little light penetrates the water surface. Marginal vegetation also tends to grow thickly. The water itself is typically stained dark brown with humic acids and other chemicals released by decaying organic material. The dissolved mineral content is generally negligible and the pH can be as low as 3.0 or 4.0. The substrate is usually littered with fallen leaves, branches and submerged tree roots. Some of these habitats are known to become starved of water during the dry season, the fish surviving in small puddles or layers of moist leaf litter until the rains return.
